How do Communities Respond to Gun Violence Prevention Policies?
Summary
This project involves a qualitative evaluation of gun violence prevention services in New Haven, utilizing a community-based participatory action research (CBPAR) model. Its goal is to explore: (1) How do individuals and communities impacted by gun violence understand its underlying causes and experience its effects? (2) How do individuals and communities experience gun violence prevention work?
Approach
Numerous studies have responded to legislators, political leaders and activists calls for investments in evidence-based and evidence-informed solutions for gun violence.
There is, however, a substantial knowledge gap in the understanding of gun violence prevention work from the perspective of those who receive this work – individuals at high risk of being victims or perpetrators of gun violence, and impacted communities.
In response to this evaluation gap, this explores strengths and challenges of local initiatives. Findings from this study will be based on analyses of focus groups discussions and analyses of semi-structured interviews conducted by community co-researchers.
In response to this evaluation gap, this project relies on a Community Based Participatory Action Research (CBPAR) model to explore strengths and challenges of a GVI program from the perspective of those impacted by gun violence and stakeholders of gun violence prevention work.
Findings from this study will be based on analyses of focus groups discussions and analyses of semi-structured interview transcripts.
Funding
This project is supported by a grant from The Fund for a Safer Future and The New Venture Fund.
