Summary

The Community Vitality Study (CVS) is a series of research surveys of police officers and the residents of US cities. The primary goal of the CVS is to better understand the views that both residents and police officers have on police-community relations and other local public policy issues. This includes their views about the quality of local government agencies, like police and social services, as well as their views about alternative approaches to improving the social, economic, and civic development of local communities.

Approach

  • The CVS combines longitudinal surveys of police and community residents with qualitative interviews.

  • The surveys include a diverse sample of approximately 2,000 residents from each participating city.

  • All sworn police officers in the police department for each participating city are also surveyed.

Funding

The study is primarily funded by The Justice Collaboratory, and has also received funding support from the City of Yonkers, NY and Mulford Housing Corporation.
